SCHOOL NEWS: May 5-11, 2010

Music Recital Behavior
On Monday we began a series of May recitals! We know that our student musicians have practiced very hard for these performances, and so we need to ensure that we have the audience’s silent, respectful attention. The following gentle reminders are listed because they have been issues in previous years:

Well-behaved siblings are welcome at the concerts. However, the recitals are in the evening and if younger siblings cannot sit through a recital quietly at this hour, please arrange for childcare.

If a younger child starts to run around or cry, please leave the auditorium with him or her.

Cell phones should be turned off, and video games are not allowed.

Student musicians should be seated quietly on the bench and should be respectful of each performer.

Student musicians should not be in other parts of the school or running in and out of the restrooms.

Sister Marilyn will be meeting with each group of student musicians before the recitals and making general announcements to the entire student body about polite behavior.

We look forward to wonderful evenings of music that reflect the talents of our students and teachers! Thank you for your cooperation!

Today we sent home three informational letters with your oldest child. Please ask him/her for this information.

Mandatory Student Planner Order Form
We will be introducing mandatory student planners to students in Grs. 4-8 for the 2010-2011 school year. They will be used to manage homework assignments, test dates, and project due dates. These will take the place of homework notebooks. The cost of a student planner is $6.00 each. Students will receive their planners at the beginning of the new school year. Please complete the order form and submit it with your payment to the school office marked Student Planners by Monday, May 24.

Summer 2010 Music Lessons Information
The summer is great time to study an instrument! Many of the St. Cecilia School music teachers keep their private studios open in the summer. Summer music lessons are not sponsored by St. Cecilia School, and lessons are not given on the school/parish property. Summer is a great time for new students to discover if they like studying music before making a semester-long commitment and for continuing students to learn new pieces. There are no recitals during summer music!

The instruments available are: piano, recorder, flute, clarinet, sax, violin, viola, 'cello and guitar. Please note – if you choose the piano, you need to rent or own a traditional, acoustic piano in your home (not an electronic keyboard).

If you have any questions about summer music lessons, please call Bonnie Knight at home: 415-665-1583.

Confirmation
On Saturday, May 8, at 10:30 A.M., our seventh graders will be confirmed by Archbishop George Niederauer. We pray that the Holy Spirit will be with these newly confirmed as they continue to grow and mature in their faith! Thank you to the sixth parents who will provide refreshments in the pavilion following the ceremony. This will allow you an opportunity for pictures with the Archbishop.

Strawberry Day
Each year, on May 10, the Sisters of the Holy Names celebrate Strawberry Day or Founders’ Day. The community archives recount the story of six Sisters of the Holy Names from Hocheloga, Canada who were destined for Oakland, California and who boarded the “Ocean Queen” in New York. After a long ocean voyage they reached the Isthmus of Panama on the Atlantic side and crossed the Isthmus in a little train. They boarded another ship in the Pacific Ocean and after another long voyage entered San Francisco harbor on Sunday, May 10, 1868. The Mercy Sisters from St. Mary’s Hospital took them home and served luscious strawberries, the first of the season. This year we will celebrate this special day by having strawberry ice cream on Monday, May 10. Earlier in the year we asked about children’s allergies. We will follow that list and have vanilla ice cream for those students who are allergic to strawberries.

Sandwiches
You have been so generous all year providing lunches on Wednesdays for the needy. Wednesday, May 26, will be our last “Wednesday Sandwich Day” for this school year. We will begin again next October. Thank you!

St. Cecilia 16th Annual Walk & Jog-a-thon Friday, May 14, 2010
Mark your calendar today! We need your support to make this a fun and successful fundraiser for St. Cecilia’s athletic programs. Funds raised from this event are used to buy new equipment for girls’ and boys’ sports programs including volleyballs, basketballs, uniforms, and other items that need to be replaced due to wear and tear.

How it works
Click here for your sponsor sheet. Sign up as many sponsors as you can, based on the number of laps you think you can run/walk. Donations should be collected at the time of the pledge. Fill out your sponsor sheet and prize tickets and return them to the school office with the money you collected.

Listen to the morning announcements, starting Monday, May 10, for your raffle ticket to be pulled. There will be 3 winners per day and the prizes vary. Prizes include professional team jerseys, jackets, t-shirts, hats, balls and equipment.

Walk, jog, or run and have some fun at the Jog-a-thon on Friday, May 14. Grades Kindergarten-4 will walk/jog around the schoolyard. Grades 5-8 will walk/jog around Larsen Park. Once finished, all grades will enjoy a chilly treat.
